From Hasselt to Antarctica... the coldest place on earth!
Suppose for a minute that you were suddenly transported from pleasant, welcoming and heart-warming Hasselt to a place 14,000 km away. An inhospitable but fascinating world where everything is permanently frozen and where the average annual temperature is -50°C...
Welcome to Antarctica! It truly is the coldest place on earth...
So not really your ideal holiday destination?
Well, adventurer and Hasselt native Adrien de Gerlache went there 120 years ago.He led his 19 crew members on an expedition to the frozen continent on board the ship Belgica. They were trapped in ice as they tried to sail across the Antarctic Circle, and for 11 months the crew tried in vain to liberate the hapless vessel.
Now, for the first time, ICE MAGIC takes you on an adventure through that icy world... although for you it will be much more fun than it was for them!
Fascinating discoveries! Fun for young and old! Walk between impressive walls of ice, through crevices and over rocks. Meet exciting figures, even little penguins and king penguins... And who knows, maybe a whale will break the surface, or you will spot seals or sea lions on the ice floes. It’ll get even more impressive when you find the icebound expedition ship Belgica and Captain de Gerlache... an excellent place for a selfie. Or maybe you’ll prefer the “slide”, made entirely of ice!
But Hasselt is never very far away. At the end of your walk you’ll be able to discover some of the city’s attractions, first and foremost the over-6-metre-high Hasselt giant Don Christophe, better known as “De Langeman”.
All this in a compact 375 m2 eco-thermal pavilion where the temperature averages... -6°C. All the more reason, after your Ice Magic adventure, to treat yourself to a cup of hot chocolate or Hasselt gin and continue to have a great time at Winterland!
